My House

Okay blog readers, I have a question for you. Pretend you have a house and it's a fixer upper/lifelong project you mostly enjoy. You want to have a big housewarming-esque party soon (since you've lived in this house for almost 3 months). But you are a perfectionist who doesn't stop working until *everything* is done *just right*. SOO when do you have this party? WHEN?????

In January, I said we would party in March and now March is almost over. Lately I've said the party will be in April, as soon as I'm done painting the trim in the kitchen and dining room. Or maybe the beginning of May so we can get the yard looking nicer. But then it occurred to me we might want to have the screened in porch painted so people can hang out in there, not just inside. That led to the thought: well, may as well wait until June when it is warm so we can entertain on the balcony too, since there will be so many people here (yeah, I'm that popular) (eye rolling commences). However, the balcony needs painted and sealed so that would have to come first, BEFORE the party. Nono, that's too much. But we really should do the balcony before we party in April. No, we won't have time for that. Well, wait, how about as soon as the pond is filled in? Sometime in April? But then we still have to re-carpet the guest room. Oh, and pant it and the pink hallway bathroom. Oh, and I really should make some decent curtains for our bathroom. Well, what about the deck? I need more patio furniture for people to sit on. Oh, I need to get the dining room finished soon, the house is a wreck right now. And I need to try much harder to paint tomorrow, gotta get the trim done. Maybe I'll wait until I've painted the trim in the living roomt too?

NOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So basically, our first GIANT party is going to happen in about 5 years.

Tell me this: WHERE DO YOU DRAW THE LINE????? Please tell me to not freak out about getting everything done. Yeah right, do you KNOW me??? But then what do I set as my "Get This Stuff Done Then Party" limit? Because our to do list is 5 pages long. Typed. Sad.

  1. What's the point in having a house-warming party when the house is already warm? In other words, have it now before summer gets here. Otherwise, you would have lived in the house two seasons and still not had the party.

  2. Perfect is the enemy of good. Have a party when you want and ask your brain to quiet down a little. :)

  3. That's a hard one! Really, I mean it. I am the EXACT same way. I wouldn't know what to do either. But for you I say you should just go ahead and have the party. Get it to where you feel somewhat comfortable with it (if that's possible). You can always have another party in 5 years to show all your hard work ;) hehe. Just remember the party is to celebrate your new house and start of a new life as a family (atleast that's what it would be to me). So let people enjoy you and your house. Seeing all the flaws will make people appreciate all you have gone through to make it so nice!!

  4. Well, if you have your party with your house not completely finished and perfect, then you can tell people what you plan to do and that it's gonna be a lot of work and maybe you can get some of your friends and family to help you with your projects.

You should have it when you are ready. Get it to an acceptable point where everything isn't perfect. Nobody is going to notice if you don't get perfect curtains for your bathroom or if the guest room carpet isn't the perfect color. Most likely, you are making it a bigger deal than you think and no one is going to inspect your house for perfection. Don't worry about it. (Honestly, I would probably feel and think exactly like you if this was me)

  5. Hmmm...I just had a houseful over the weekend and didn't even bother picking up the DVDs that M scattered all over the living room. I'm your polar opposite, in other words.

Maybe you could kill two birds with one stone. Throw a fix-up party, and everyone should come prepared in work clothes. Have the guests help with a big project and reward them with pizza and beer. That way, the house can be as-is, you can check something off the list, you'll have your housewarming, and your friends will have the satisfaction of knowing they chipped-in. :)

  6. I am COMPLETELY like you (it runs in the family) and at the same time I've started learning to just do it. Your house is very cool and people won't care if it still needs some lovin'.

I would say just finish the trim painting that you started and have the party! Although I would be tempted to hold out for warm weather because your deck is amazing-not because of unfinished projects. :)

  7. I have a friend that bought this neat Geodesic dome house: http://fairoaksdome.com/main.php?g2_page=53

It's still very incomplete, and still needs all sorts of things done. Despite that, they have large gatherings of friends who take a great interest in how much progress they have made on the house. Having everyone take an interest in it is probably a motivator in getting things done too! Not that you would ever been in need of a motivator. So I guess my advice would be to party and make repair issues a conversation topic.
